What Is the Working Principle of a 2K Mixing Machine?

A 2K mixing machine, also known as a two-component metering and mixing machine, is designed to automatically process two-component adhesives such as epoxy, polyurethane (PU), and silicone. The system accurately meters, mixes, and dispenses two separate materials to achieve a consistent adhesive mixture.

The basic working principle can be summarized as:

Material Supply → A/B Metering → Ratio Control → Mixing → Dispensing → Curing

1. Separate Storage of A and B Components

A 2K adhesive normally consists of two components:

  • Component A: Resin
  • Component B: Hardener

The two materials are stored separately in independent tanks to prevent premature chemical reaction.

Depending on the adhesive, the tanks may be equipped with heating, stirring, vacuum degassing, and level monitoring systems.

2. Precision Metering

The A and B components are delivered from their respective tanks to precision metering pumps.

The pumps control the amount of each component according to the required mixing ratio, such as:

1:1, 2:1, 4:1, 10:1 or other customized ratios.

Accurate metering is essential because an incorrect A/B ratio can affect the adhesive’s curing performance, hardness, bonding strength and final product quality.

3. Automatic Ratio Control

The control system coordinates the A and B metering pumps to maintain the programmed mixing ratio.

For example, if the required ratio is 2:1, the machine automatically controls the material delivery so that two parts of Component A are mixed with one part of Component B.

This process reduces manual errors and provides consistent adhesive output during continuous production.

4. Mixing of Two Components

After metering, the A and B components enter the mixing system.

Depending on the adhesive and application, a 2K machine can use:

  • Static mixing
  • Dynamic mixing
  • Rotary mixing
  • Static-dynamic mixing

A static mixer uses specially designed internal elements to divide, fold and recombine the two materials as they pass through the mixer.

A dynamic mixing head uses mechanical movement to promote more intensive and uniform mixing, making it suitable for certain high-viscosity or demanding applications.

5. Precise Adhesive Dispensing

After mixing, the activated adhesive is delivered through the dispensing valve or nozzle.

The machine can control:

  • Dispensing volume
  • Dispensing speed
  • Start/stop time
  • Glue flow rate
  • Dispensing path

Depending on the machine configuration, it can perform point, line, curve, circle, area or customized dispensing patterns.

6. Potting, Bonding or Sealing

The mixed adhesive is then applied to the target product.

Typical applications include:

  • Electronic component potting
  • LED driver encapsulation
  • Power supply potting
  • Sensor encapsulation
  • Transformer potting
  • Automotive electronics
  • Battery and new-energy components
  • Waterproof sealing
  • Industrial bonding and gasketing

The adhesive then cures according to its specified curing conditions.

7. Automatic Cleaning and Material Management

Because 2K adhesives begin reacting after the two components are mixed, controlling residual material is important.

Depending on the machine configuration, the system can include:

  • Automatic mixer purging
  • Solvent or cleaning-fluid flushing
  • Anti-drip function
  • Suck-back function
  • Automatic nozzle cleaning
  • Material low-level alarms
  • Vacuum degassing

These functions help reduce material waste and maintain stable dispensing performance.
